That's close, but not
quite right.
You're getting power to both wheels. With an open differential, power only goes to one wheel if the opposite wheel isn't getting any traction.
The only way to get even power to both wheels is to install a locker. With a locker, both wheels get 50/50 power no matter what.
You'd want a locker if you were going to turn the truck into a wheeling beast.
But for light wheeling, you'd want a limited slip differential. Those will transfer some power to the wheel with grip if the other one is slipping, although in some extreme circumstances, they're not that much better than an open differential. But LSD's also have better manners for daily driving on pavement, and
anything is better than an open diff. You can look at thee axle code chart to see which Ranger axles have LSD's. 2002 Rangers with the Off-Road package, and 2003 and up FX4 Level II's have the superior Torsen limited slip differential.
