Question rear axle question

i was told i have an open end rear...meaning power only goes to 1 wheel. is there any way i can change that so i have a straight axle so i get even power to both rear wheeels? thanks

That's close, but not quite right.

You're getting power to both wheels. With an open differential, power only goes to one wheel if the opposite wheel isn't getting any traction.

The only way to get even power to both wheels is to install a locker. With a locker, both wheels get 50/50 power no matter what.

You'd want a locker if you were going to turn the truck into a wheeling beast.
But for light wheeling, you'd want a limited slip differential. Those will transfer some power to the wheel with grip if the other one is slipping, although in some extreme circumstances, they're not that much better than an open differential. But LSD's also have better manners for daily driving on pavement, and anything is better than an open diff. You can look at thee axle code chart to see which Ranger axles have LSD's. 2002 Rangers with the Off-Road package, and 2003 and up FX4 Level II's have the superior Torsen limited slip differential.

Go to www.trsfabandoffroad.com and under lockers theres a product called lock-rite. Its got the characteristics of a locker and a spool. It allows 50/50 split on power but during hard turns allows power differences to either wheel. Also during wheeling if it sees one wheel with no traction, it locks that wheel and sends power to the wheel with traction. The lock-rite for my 7.5 was only about 320 or so and no need to remove the chunk of the rear end. Just jack the rear off the ground, remove wheels, pull cover, center pins and slide the axles out of the housing then install lock-rite where the spider gears are and reverse install. Pretty nice setup.
