howling noise when accelerating
When i accelerate i get a howling noise but when i let off the gas it stops. I checked the driveshaft and its tight so i dont think its a u-joint but i could see maybe there dry and thats why there making the noise. I was also thinking maybe the rear end but i am thinking it would make the noise all the time. I plan to take the rear diff cover off and clean it out and change the fluid tomorrow. also check the front diff and tcase. so my question is does anyone know what it could be or have all ready gone thru this issue. thanks

Could be your cooling fan clutch is trying to lock up.

Re: howling noise when accelerating
could be aggressive or worn out tires.

Re: howling noise when accelerating
sounds like its coming from behind me so i dont think its the fan. as for the tires there not aggressive and i think it would make that noise even when i am out of the gas pedal. im thinking its in the drivetrain somewhere just not sure where yet.

Re: howling noise when accelerating
Gear noise in the diff. if it happens when you are on the accelerator and stops when you let off. Had a Dakota that did this same thing.

Re: howling noise when accelerating
Well rear ujoint is bad and there was no oil in the diff. Gonna pull it all apart and see how the bearings are. Hope there all good but if there bad I hope it's just the outer pinion bearing. Have no way to press the bearings off at home

Re: howling noise when accelerating
well the pinion bearings are kinda bad. there discolored but no chips or anything like that. going to replace the outer one but have no way to change inner. going to do what i can and see what happens. plan to get a complete kit with ring and pinion and replace everything down the road. ring and pinion are ok but worn. cant get a shim kit locally so i cant fix the backlash its out of specs not sure how much but i know its more than .008-.015.

Re: howling noise when accelerating
if there was no fluid in the diff then yea all your bearings need to be replaced. Lucky there is no gear damage.
Glad you made progress

Re: howling noise when accelerating
Youre wasting youre time only doing one bearing at a time, youll be further ahead buying a complete used axle form a yard and swapping it in unless you can have all the bearings as well as the ring and pinion replaced at one time. New bearings will help but a worn ring and pinion gear will still whine like crazy.

My response was directed to the OP.
if you have the same symptom then you probably have the same issue. Bearings worn, gears worn, etc, etc.
