Pretty simple really.

Unbolt tranny mounts. Put jack under tranny. Undo bellhousing bolts. Undo flywheel bolts lower tranny. Pull torque converter. Fill torque converter with as much tranny fluid as possible. BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL when installing/uninstalling converter. When It's back on you'll feel it engage a few times. Make sure it's as far onto the shaft as the one you pulled off was.

Now work backwards.

Check fluid. Run the transmission for a minute with the wheels off the ground. When you're sure there's no leaks, SLOWLY run it through all gears with the wheels still up. Do that a couple times. Check for leaks again. Lower vehicle and drive away. If it drives weird AT ALL check fluid and check for leaks. If there's more problems probably not something you should have done... haha.

I'm about to swap a torque converter in an 02 Ranger and would like some clarification. You don't mention anything about disconnecting the exhaust pipe from the manifold before dropping the tranny. It looks like that would be a pre-requisite since it's attached to the engine and tranny and passes directly under the tranny. Also, would I disconnect the Torque converter from the flywheel through the starter hole or somewhere else?

You will most have to unbolt the exhaust. And you can unbolt the torque converter from the starter hole. Thats what I did when I dropped my trans.
