Default Help! '95 Ranger Manual Transmission Shifting Issues. Transmission or Clutch?

Hi there -

So I have a '95, 4 cylinder with a manual transmission. Lately it has been having a really hard time going into 1st, 2nd, 5th, and reverse. Sometimes the gears grind when I try to shift (especially when I try to go into reverse). Also, 1st and 2nd are sometimes nearly impossible to shift in to.

To remedy this issue, and still drive my truck, I'll have to pump the clutch twice with the shifter in neutral and most of the time I have no problem shifting into the selected gear with the exception of 1st which lately take a little bit of force. Every now and then shifting into first will be easy though.

Do you think this could be my clutch? Transmission? Both? And what would you suggest to do to fix it?

How many miles are on the truck. And do you know if the clutch has been replaced before, if not, id say you clutch is more than likely about to go.

Honestly, it could be a multitude of issues. It could be the clutch, the master or slave clutch cylinder, or the transmission could be low on fluid. Just remember the transmission uses ATF(Dexron III) if memory serves me right. Another thing try putting it in second then reverse. If it doesn't grind that way, synchronizers in the transmission may be at fault. Hope this helps.

If you can pump it up and it operates properly the hydraulics are tired, replace clutch master and slave cylinder.

I'm haaving the exact same problem. Any ballpark figure on how much a new cluth would run me? Never had to replace one before. Truck has 87k on it.

Thanks everyone!

There was actually a clog in the reservoir for the clutch fluid. Once I got that taken care of it started shifting much smoother. I'm still having some of the problems shifting every now and again but it definitely doesn't feel as urgent.

Thanks for the help!

Sorry to bump this thread, but I have some information that was asked for.

I have gotten all three components of the clutch hydraulic system, and they ran, price-wise, as follows:

Master Cylinder: $45.99 from Advance Auto

Hydraulic line: $95 from Ford (dealership)

Slave Cylinder: $47.99 from Advance Auto

With all parts, try and get a lifetime warranty--had an accident where the slave cylinder was run over and destroyed, through no fault of my own; the warranty covered the replacement.

Hope this info helps.
