Default Need help with axle

I wanna get an L/S so bad!
I tried using car-part but i don't really understand it all that much.
I need one with an 8.8 4.10 gears L/S or maybe 4.56 gears if it is a direct bolt on. Thats all i want is a direct bolt on no fabs.
If anyone can help thanks!

I am in cleveland ohio

On car part.com just select in the drop down menu "Axle Assy Rear(w. housing.)"

In the year selection put in 2003 and then on the next screen select "8.8" ring gear, 10" brakes, 4.10 ratio, FX4 (locking), w/Level II"

I do not believe there was ever a ranger with 4.56 gears

For the state of Ohio it shows 2

1 in Cincy 2003 with 81K miles $850 Carthage Auto Parts 513-761-4887 / 800-437-5715

1 in Swanton with 2006 47K for $650 Airport Auto Parts Inc. 1-800-349-1141

Thanks a ton STL! How much do they usually run? That's kind of a lot for my budget

no-fx4 are ALOT more plentiful and alot cheaper and easier to find...

4.10 LS non-fx4. Their crap is messed up because no ranger came factory with anything "locking" whatsoever.

Alright so i should get one out of an fx4 then? and is what STL found about the right price?I was looking and it says the fx4 is a 31 spline and i wanted to do disc brakes eventually. WIll it still be possible?

Thanks a lot for all the help

FX4 is 31 spline you can do disc break conversion but it is different than the 28 spline conversion.

Shane that ebay one could be locking since it is a rebuilt one

Only the FX4 Level II's are 31 spline. All other FX4's are 28 spline.

The only exception is 2002, when there was no Level II. The 31 spline axles have the Torsen limited-slip differential.

What I meant was is that you don't need a Fx4 31spline axle. They are very rare and they come with the added cost because of that rarity.

Inventories are a little off from what the enthusiasts know....that's how I got my 30,000 mile '05 Fx4 LII axle for $150. If it says non-Fx4, that's the axle I'd get if I were in your shoes....TONS more plentiful and there's tons of them out there. AND, just because it says non-Fx4, DOES NOT mean it's not Limited Slip. All Fx4 31spline axles are LS. MOST non-Fx4 axles that have 4.10s are limited slip. Just gotta look it up. Simply put, Fx4/non Fx4 don't matter so long it says limited or locking.

The inventories and computers put that locking phrase in there to represent some sort of traction aide...limited slip, locker, etc. But knowing these trucks like we do here, we know ford never offered a factory equipped locker in any Ranger or any RBV for that matter.

Here's links to putting discs on a 28spline on the cheap...
Ranger/Explorer disc brake sawp/conversion?

You can convert to discs on either 31 or 28 spline. but both disc setups would be different(explorer or aftermarket for the 31, mustang or aftermarket for the 28 spline)

Highly unlikely.

That axle only is described as "locking". Which, in almost ALL cases, means it's limited slip. Unless someone threw away $700 for a locker. Which is very unlikely. As said above, people list the word "locking" in place of "limited slip" or "LS".

Do you offroad? If so then skip the LS and get a locker.

Alright. I personally never liked the stock L/S. If I go around a tight corner and stomp on the gas I can one tire fire it. But if you are strapped for cash then the stock on is fine. If you are willing to spend on something better I would go ahead and get aftermarket.

Do you have a 7.5 or a 8.8 right now? You would have to get everything installed somewhere. If you have 7.5 you can get an 8.8 if that is what you want. Get what you want for it then have a shop install everything. Then swap it when you have time. That way you minimize your truck's downtime. With a quick search I found that Eaton and Strange make LS diffs. I'm sure there is more though.
