Default Automatic shudder/banging at 1/2 shift

Hi all,

Nice forum you have here. I've learned more about my truck in the 2 days reading stuff here than in the previous 12 years of owning my Ranger.

Unfortunately I think its days are numbered. Shortly after dropping over a thousand dollars in normal maintenance repairs the tranny developed a nasty shuddering (some here call it stuttering) on the 1 - 2 upshift under moderate throttle.

Dealership says fluid level is fine and it does not smell burnt. When I asked them if they thought a fluid/filter change would solve it his response was "In my experience this type of problem is not solved with a fluid change". They are hinting at a $1900 tranny rebuild.

Now, we just replaced a bunch of vacuum lines to solve some PVH problems for cheap money.

I'm wondering if changing the transmission modulator and associated vacuum line might be worth the effort to see if it solves the shifting issue?

I have no idea what the modulator modulates on a tranny.

Any suggestions appreciated,

Ken

The O/D light is not flashing.

Tranny fluid was last changed at 65K miles in 2006.

As you can see, I don't put a lot of miles on my truck.

Correction to detail in first post:

3.0L/FFV/V6 (not 2.9L)

By "shuddering" I mean really anything other than a smooth 1/2 shift.

The ill effect can be varied with different throttle application. In a worst case it feels like an on/off on/off 1/2 shift. It a mild case it almost sounds/feels like a low pitched "moan".

It is more pronounced when cold. But at this point I can cause it at any time with throttle application. Backing off the throttle allows the transmission to complete the shift and then 2/3 and 3/OD still feel normal.

It came on pretty suddenly after a weeks worth of some harder than normal driving (a 230 mi round trip followed by several 80 mi round trips in a short span). My normal driving is like 5 miles per day....

^^ this and if that doesnt help you could always try to find a used tranny to drop in it instead of having it rebuild.....

That's what I'm thinking....

As to my original question, no hints that the modulator/vacuum lines might be contributing to this??

Damn New England weather, makes it a pain in the butt to do your own maintenance without a garage....

Thanks for the input,

Ken

Hey guys,

Thanks for the input. I tried changing the fluid (no filter, one of those quick change shops that supposedly pump out the old stuff and replace it with the new stuff, not sure it does crap).

It was still cranky so I solved it with a big hammer. I'm now the proud owner of a 2011 Ranger XLT 4x4 with the 4.0L engine (much more pep than the old 3.0!).

The dealer made me an offer I couldn't refuse giving me $2500 for a compromised 12 year old trade in!

Ken
