Grinding noise coming from wheel area. Can't figure out why
First off I know nothing about trucks and have never worked on one in my life. With that said there is a noise coming from the wheel area of my 99 ranger 3.0. It sounds like metal on metal grinding. When I slam on the brakes the noise goes away temporarily. Then comes back a short time later.
I changed the break pads and rotor on the side the noise was coming from. That didn't do anything to help the problem. Any idea of what it might be? TY

Is it whistling as well? Could be your wheel bearings and seal. But you said it was grinding. Maybe it's your pads and rotors on the other side.

Re: Grinding noise coming from wheel area. Can't figure out why
I've got a '99 3.0 too, and have experienced a similar issue. It's a swishy-squeal that I can hear at low speeds and it only seems to happen when the weather starts to get colder. I took it to my mechanic who says he checked it out and lubed the seals last week. It rained yesterday and the noise is back once again.
There doesn't seem to be an effect on the drivability of the truck and I'm not noticing a 'grinding' like the OP, but it's getting irritating to hear that noise and then be told "nothing's wrong with your truck".

could be the wheel bearings (did you re-grease them when you replaced the rotors?) or the pads/rotor on the other side are worn.

Re: Grinding noise coming from wheel area. Can't figure out why
Ok I finally got my licence back after it being suspended for a total of 9 years or so. I am ready to finally try and get my truck running good again. This awful grinding noise started a long time ago actually now that I think of it. It eventually got worse and worse as time went on. Now it's to the point were it's VERY loud and sounds like metal is grinding on some other metal. Hitting the brakes hard makes the noise stop periodically.
I remember changing the brake pads and rotors years ago and that didn't seem to fix the problem. So I was hoping you guys could give me a check list of things to look at on the truck that might be the problem. So far all I can think it could be is Brakes, Bearings, or maybe some gearing issues as it's a 4x4. Any suggestions/comments would be great thanks.

No question, it's the wheel hub assembly. As far as I know, bearings can't be replaced - you have to replace the entire assembly.

Re: Grinding noise coming from wheel area. Can't figure out why
Ok thanks a lot guys. Should I get a replacement electric hub like I have now? Or should I try and make the switch to a manual hub instead? I'm just wondering because mine is electric and I don't know how much extra work a manual would be compared to an electric? Any advice is appreciated thanks.

Re: Grinding noise coming from wheel area. Can't figure out why
So is this the only part I need? Or do I need to buy bearings and other stuff as well? Can you guys tell me exactly what I need to buy? Again please excuse my ignorance. Thanks for the help.

So what's the average cost to replace the rear hubs? They are the vacuum hubs and I'm totally hearing the same thing from my left hub got under looked directly at it and moved the truck.
got under and rolled it forward a few inches or so , I hear almost metal on metal slight screech, stops when going faster, either it stops or it's being drowned out, while under the truck and rolling it forward I could hear it coming directly from the hub.

99 3.0 4x4. Not sure if you wanted any other specs...
Also I am pretty sure the noise is coming from one of the front wheels, not the back. I will be tinkering around on the truck tomorrow with my uncle, so hopefully we can at least locate were the problem is. I'm sure I will have more questions to ask on here soon. Thanks for all the help so far everyone.
