never taken one apart that had fluid in it. shouldn't there be a gasket on top between the linkage?

I'd bet on the shift rail plugs. They are rubber and prone to leaking. They are located up near the shifter on the back of the transmission.

Re: 5 speed manual trans
i saw those on an older transmission and was debating it was them or is there a rubber boot that cover the top of the shifter?

Re: 5 speed manual trans
I would bet on the plugs first. As to getting to them, I couldn't say how easy that will be. Try getting to them through the shifter hole in the floor or from under the truck first.
If that doesn't work, you might need to drop the tranny. Depending on how old your clutch is, it might be time to look at changing the clutch and slave cylinder since they will be exposed and save on labor costs or labor if you are doing the work yourself.
