Did you check the ujoints on the driveshaft before calling the rearend bad? The mechanic sounds like he is full of shit.

X2

The swap is easy, finding out it didn't solve a thing sometimes leaves you banging your head against the steering wheel.

Make sure the axle has the same gear ratio too. 7.5" or 8.8" doesn't matter but if you have an 8.8", stay with it. The gear ratio must match or you will have other problems to boot.

The 7.5 and the 8.8 have different axle tube sizes so get all the hardware off the junk yard axle if it's other than what you have.

Thanks everyone, but I ended up getting screwed on getting the mazda rear and basically back to square 1. Now I'm not sure if the banging or snapping is the rear or the trans snapping into gear. when I take off from a stand still it feels like the truck jumps up and when u let off throttle it kinda jumps back. It's weird. You can feel it in your back as if it u were running quarter mile and at start letting go the trans brake, almost like that with out the horse power, but can't tell if it the trans or rear.

Wrong the 28 spline 8.8 and 28 spline 7.5 have identical tubes only the 3rd member is different.

You check the ujoints and to see if there is any play in the shaft yet?
