You shouldn't have to, everything should stay the same.

Not a problem. It sounds more complicated than it really is. The hardest part will be dealing with the old, rusted hardware than anything else.

A 3.73:1 rear end is liated as standard in my rear end and has a 1580# (or something like that) in my owner's manual for a 4-banger with a stick (aside from the 3.45:1 axle).
4.10:1 for the automatics. You could probably go with a 4.10:1 but nothing is listed as a weight limit with a manual tranny, so it will do at least what a 3.73:1 will do, probably more. Your gas mileage will take a big hit going with a 4.10:1 though.

The 3.73:1 is a known quantity and will probably give you the best mpg and needed towing power compromise. The 4.10:1 will get better grunt but you will take a definite hit on mpg. It's really a personal call.

Looking at the load capacity of the Ranger, it's bed size, and the fact that we have a 4 banger, there probably won't be a lot of realized gain going with the 4.10.

In theory you could put a limited slip in. I think it would require swaping out the gears to do it but I really don't know. Try checking newfordparts.com or aftermarket. From what I remember, the cost of an axle swap out and doing a differential change would end up being about the same. I could be wrong though.

If you stay with the same size gear 7.5 or 8.8 (which ever you currently have), I THINK you won't have to worry about speed indication problems.

The ride height and drive shaft should stay the same. You may need to swap the flange from the one axle to the other if they are different (no big deal from what I've been told - 3/4" or 1" nut holds it on) and ride height is dictated by your tires, wheels, and springs, the axle shouldn't have anything to do with it.
