The differentials have a tag on them with the gear ratio stamped into it.

on www.car-part.com it will ask you what configuration you want in your axle and you choose. ie. 7.5" 9" brakes 3.73 gears non-locking or 8.8 10" brakes 4.10 gears l/s or torsen.

Sometimes you need those giant press things that apply like 2k pounds of pressure to push the yolks out of the gears

Ok, just making sure I'm reading everything here correctly. I would like to get a new rear axle with 3.73 gearing and a limited slip differential. Everything should tranfer over with no problems, correct? I won't need a new drive shaft or anything. Just "drop and swap", correct?

I need to get new springs soon anyway since the driver's side rear spring has a broken leaf, so now would be a good time while the u-bolts ans such would be all new.

Everything should be a "drop and swap". BUT....some older axles(mid 90's and earlier) need the bigger driveshaft flange because newer trucks have a 1330 ujoint while older trucks take a 1310 ujoint. 1330 is bigger. But you can always carry over what's on your truck right now and bolt it to the new axle if needed. The flange I'm talking about is what the drive shaft bolts to on the axle itself. FWIW, my brothers '01 7.5 had the same flange as my 01 8.8...1330 ujoints.

I might be good then since mine is a '98. I'll see what I can find out on the u-joints...

It's nothing really to worry about... you're new axle will have a flange on it. your old axle has a flange on it. If the shaft won't bolt up to the new axle, swap the flange. I think it's a 32mm or 1 1/4" socket to 1 nut, slide it off, buzz it back on, bolt on shaft.

Even better yet. If I'm gonna have a RWD truck, I would like to at least have both wheels doing the work...
