After torque has been applied for a short time in Hi or Low it will come out of 4wd- does the same in forward or reverse. So it is fully engaged for a few mins.
OK -- Im on a hill that is snow coverd, I start to go up it and then it kicks out of 4wd- I now quickly let of the gas stop the rear from spinning and then apply gas again - Its back in 4wd and repeat.
May kick/slip out sooner.
I can climb over the snow bank to get out of my drive way but that is all.
The light stays on and the button light stays on.
What could this be?
Gears?
Transfer?
tranmis?
sometype of engagment mech?
Front hub thing?

well we can rule out front hubs UNLESS its a wheel bearing issue because 01+ 4wd rangers dont have front hubs to lock/unlock ...they are always locked in...how many miles are on your truck

It started at 28k - I just never had it fixed! Why, Im not sure.

A long long time ago....
I was stuck- I had it in 4wd and over did it. I put it in drive then reverse about a 40 times. I stoped and slept it off , when the ground had froze the next morning it climbed right out.
