Question Tranny fluid/Honest Shop?

In my never-ending and mostly disappointing search for indy mechanics who are honest and competent, I recently took my 2005 Ranger (2.3L/automatic) to a shop that did a complete tranny flush and charged me for 13 quarts of fluid. My book says the tranny fluid capacity is 10 quarts. Twelve bucks ain't the world, but it suggests this shop may be trying to squeeze out some extra profit wherever and however they can.

Before I form a negative conclusion about them: Is there any plausible reason why they would have used three extra quarts of fluid for this job? Flush and discard, maybe?

maybe but i had a shop charge my grams with a set of point's for her 99 dodge van (witch dose not even have point's) and at $175 for point's. thay where ripping off people right and left. so to say that shops are honest i would never go some where where i dont know them!

Default Ripoff

Whoa, now that's a SERIOUS ripoff!!! And not any doubt about it, either. Even if it had points, back in the day I used to replace points, plugs, and condenser on various cars for $20 or less for all the parts. Even with inflation, $175 is so far out I'm amazed they tried to get that one by you. Or is that supposed to be parts and labor? Either way, clearly a crooked shop.

In my case, I suspect a minor ripoff but am not 100% sure. BTW, the entire job -- "Premium transmission service" -- cost me just shy of $200, supposedly included filter, gasket, complete flush and fluid replacement. The fluid was about $4 a quart. I only had them do it because I just bought the truck used and wanted to establish a baseline for any future transmission service.

well thats about what it would cost around here for a good shop to do a good full service on it. plus you have the right to go back if something should happen and thats worth it if you need it
