Question Transmission or Clutch problem???

94 Ranger 4.0 4x4 5-Speed manual

Background: We put in a used tranny and new Sachs clutch kit in last winter. The tranny had a stamp that said to use Type F in it. The previous owner had replaced the tranny twice before. The truck has about 63275 on the odometer, but we find that hard to believe.

Problem symptoms: Whenever you let off the gas pedal or downshift to a higher RPM, You would hear a loud grinding/winding noise and I lost all power to the wheels. You would have to depress the clutch pedal, pull t out of gear for a bit, coast for a little while, then put it back into gear.

Then, as this got worse, you would have to come to a complete stop before the noise would stop. In otherwords, depress the clutch pedel, put it into neutral, and come to a stop.

Finally, when I was driving today, the grinding started and I had to come to a stop. When I started and got above 15 mph, the grinding noise kicked in agian without slowing down at all. When I had my friend come with a toe strap, we got above 25 mph and the grinding noise started while the truck was supposedly in neutral. When I reved it to about 3K, the grinding noise went away unless I let off the gas
or we slowed down
I pulled the transfer case, tranny, and slave. The throw out bearing looks good and when I pulled the drain plug on the tranny, the magnetic plug had about a 1/16" coat of metal "shavings" on it.

Any ideas on what is causing this problem and if it's the tranny again, what would be causing this? Thanx to all who respond!!!

Pull the top cover off of the tranny. It uses a rubber seal, so it will seal right back up when you are done. Look at all the gear stacks. I have seen a couple times where the bearings got sloppy in the countershaft and and it had enough play to rub the idler and make all sorts of noise. Another thing to check is the the nuts that hold the gears on the shafts, if they arent torqued down enough and crimped they will back off and the gears will loosen up and let syncros come apart. A little film of metal shavings on the plug is common. my 94 had a crap ton on it when I changed the fluid at 170,xxx, and I have put 20,xxx more miles on it still going strong,
