Post 97 rear disc conversion

I have a 97 4wd, I want to change out to discs in the rear. I have the 4.0 with the auto. Do I need to rob an axle or are there parts I can get from something else and put it on? And what years would I need? I know there are a ton of threads on axles but none of them deal with my year. Do I need a proportioning valve too? I could use the help with the information. I can do all the work myself which makes that part easy I just need the tech info to get it figured out.

I didn't know if that year came with it or not. I have a limited slip in my rear I don't want to give up either. And does the E brake bolt up the same? And I've seen some guys have to change the perch mount angles for the rear or maybe they are swapping the mount from their axle to the explorer axle because don't explorers have coils in the rear?

all 95+ expos have discs. But the brakes won't just swap onto your existing axle. And hooking up the e-brake can be a royal pain and nobody I've seen has a nice looking ebrake cable setup running that axle/or brakes.

Richard...if all you want are discs, I suggest using 95-04 mustang GT or Cobra brakes. It's almost a direct bolt on. Only modification is to the caliper bracket so you can mount it on the backside of the brake mount flange on the axle. You use your existing parking brake cables and many report not needing a new proportioning valve or new master on 95+ trucks. Though, I've seen people put in an adjustable proportioning valve in your era truck. 4whl ABS trucks don't need anything addressed...it's all done electronically. Here's a post my little brother made of his rear setup:

Click me: Ranger/Explorer disc brake sawp/conversion?

Just take a look at the posts in link and the links I posted in the thread for more info.

I was reading this thread earlier but had no idea if it would work on my truck or not. Thank you for the help. I actually know a bunch of wrecked mustangs sitting around back home so I can get the parts. How long did the conversion take? And how hard was it to get all these parts off the mustang? Or did you just get a whole rear end for one?

Hardest part of the pull job at a yard would be pulling the axle shafts out the axle. lol. Literally, caliper unbolted, pull rotor, pull shafts, unbolt caliper bracket, get whatever with the brake hoses(little bro went all new soft lines and bent up new hardlines)...and you're done. I bet pulling the stuff would only take half hour. Doing the actual swap to the truck, pretty easy. Had his done in about 2hours and that was taking out sweet time. He went brand new on all his parts, though he did sell a set he pulled at a yard.

These trucks have C-clips, so diff cover has to come off to get to the clips to slide out the shafts.

Judging by your 'headline' thing, I assume your mechanically inclined....you shouldn't have any problems if you're comfortable doing brakes and axle work on the smaller vehicles. lol.

Axle works easy, I have an associates in Diesel Equipment technology and am finishing my bachelors in the same thing out here in Montana. I spent the summer doing work on steering axles for Cat 797 haul trucks the size of a house and while I'm in school I work at the railroad on locomotives. Fun stuff. Axles are no sweat. I'd do new soft lines too, you never know why the cars are there. I may need to get a new calipers and rotors too. Sounds like an easy enough conversion. You're down in Portland I may have to swing down and meet you in your brother when I'm back in Washington. My step brothers live in Beaverton.

That may be why your truck looks familiar too. Let me know when the next one is, or I'll try and pay attention to when it is so I can meet up with you guys. I got a buddy there with a 94 (I don't remember the exact year) turbo'd 2.3 Ranger you might have met. It's a orange long bed 2wd. My buddy Michael. He swapped a 8.8 out of a exploder in his truck but he has a different year than mine to. He likes it and that's what go me thinking about it.

hahaha...we've only had a couple meet ups there and when I am there, it's for the big ass junkyard there in town or meeting up with someone there. lol. You may recognize the truck going up and down and up and down the I5 corridor ALOT of times this past year....maybe you saw it then? Cuz I know my buddy's have seen it as I was going south and they were going north just about every monday morning when I come home. lol. Pretty cool. I'll add ya to the list of people to contact when a meets coming up. 2.3T sounds pretty sweet....that'll make me make the brother come along too! lol.

That truck hauls monkey butt. Just did the crossover conversion on the intake. Tell your bro to bring his along and I'll get Michael out, he'd love to find someone else with one. He's looking for a Cummins Holset hx35 turbo if you know where one is. And it's always fun to watch a truck beat on the ricers around. I'm a domestic guy. I remember seeing the truck on of the weeks I was home. Maybe it was different, but it's not everyday you see a Ranger that big. There's the big ass junkyard down in Winlock that you're talking about? And what are you cruising up and down I5 for all the time?

I seriously think my little brother has 3 or 4 hx35's. Not sure but I know they're Holset's that he used on his jet engines he builds. lol. The yard I'm talking about is 'officially' in Chehalis. Called like I5 auto and truck parts. Exit 71 I think?

Anywho...what are you cruising up and down I5 for all the time? Ex-gf lives in Seattle.

Yup, that's the winlock exit, its unicorporated part of chehalis but its across the freeway from winlock. I5 auto salvage. They just expanded in the last year, place is huge! If your bro has a turbo let me know how much he wants I'll pass the price on and if he's go get your bro info.

I know how ex's go and long drives, that sucks. My gf lives in Spokane and I'm in north central Montana, thats an 8 hour drive on a good day. I love driving though lol just wish I had a manual in my rig.

I am running an Exploder axle with discs and I just had to make a new bracket for the cables. It has to be moved back about 4 inches.

Here is a pic of my bracket. I have 64" springs, so my hanger is 6"s further forward than stock., but the concept would be the same on a stock setup.

I used the stock brackets on my Expo swap, and everything looks factory. I really don't understand why people use cable clamps and such when they hook it up. Mine works great using all stock parts from the donor vehicles.
