Re: New transmission fluid help
theyre super easy to do...crawl under the truck take out the fill and drain plug...let the fluid drain and then put the drain plug in and pump in the new fluid until it starts coming out the fill hole...then put the plug in and youre done

Re: New transmission fluid help
Murdock, at the top right of your page, there is a option called "Quick Links". Click that and then click on "Edit Signature".
Add important information about your truck...
Year, Make, Model
Engine size, Transmission

Re: New transmission fluid help
if i'm not mistaken ford switched from 90w to atf in 89 in their manual trannies.... the easiest way to tell is to crawl under the truck and pull the fill plug and smell the back of it. if it smells like old cat piss then it will be 90w if it smells more like you would find in an auto tranny it's atf....

Re: New transmission fluid help
LOL....If your tranny is running OK....DO NOT flush the fluid. Newer fluids have a lot of detergents that will break down the deposits in your transmission and will most likely cause A LOT of issues. People in your situation who change their fluid often end up with slipping gears, leaking trannys, shifting issues, and other very very bad things.
DO NOT flush and fill your tranny!

So when should I? If I get slipping and other problems? Anyone else verify this?

Re: New transmission fluid help
Tranny fluid should be replaced regularly or not at all. In your case, you might be able to get away with slowly replacing your fluid if it is leaking. But most likely, your gonna cause damage.
How many miles are on the truck/tranny?

I think I've got around 300k on it and it's never been replaced, changed, or "topped off"...I was just gonna do it as regular maintenance though
