Default transmission flush

i read that the fluid in the transmission doesnt usually go bad. does anybody ever flush it out to change it??

How would oil never go bad? Ford recommends changing the fluid, so I've changed it.

Inspect fluid level every oil change and change fluid every 30,000 miles change fuel filter every 15,000 miles

idk thats what i said. i read that in my chilton book. but ok so ill change my tranny fluid and i changed my diff fluid today. any other fluids that should be changed?

The fluid runs through the clutches. Anytime you drive there is slippage occurring because that is how an auto tranny works. All that clutch material ends up in the fluid. Also the fluid is constantly being forced around by the pump through tight spaces. 15k fuel filter is really quite excessive IMO. Ford mainainence schedules even say that's excessive.

I just whipped out my '01 owners kit thing....Says 30,000 mile intervals for the fuel filter and for the auto trans it's 30,000 mile intervals. Although, it says its for certain autos, no where does it list a Ranger auto trans. so....30,000 would be a good choice. Better to change it more frequent than go 100k with the stock fluid.


Like Christian said above, manuals go alot longer on fluid. It's basically just like axle lubrication: splash and cool. Service interval on manuals, according to Ford, is 60,000 miles.

I looked in a 01 owners manual and found that where it said fuel filter 15,000

Thumbs up transmission flush

When you change the AT fluid, you should change the filter and sometimes some of them even have a mesh screen that should be looked at and cleaned. I recommend the ATP tranny kits, as they have a very good gasket and filter. It's better than a Wix! Don't go cheap on this one, as quality is important here. And it doesn't pay to go cheap on the fluid here, as you don't change it that often. Get the best!

When you remove the pan, remove a few at a time from one side and loosen the middle slowly. That way the fluid will come out in your drain pan, not all over the floor. Check for metal in the pan. A tiny bit is normal, a lot-Then you have some problems. When removing the filter, you should use a 6 point socket if it has a nut to avoid stripping it out. When replacing the filter, don't over tighten. Don't overtighten the bolts either. Try to follow the mfg bolt tightening sequence if they have one. Tighten the bolts in sequence around the pan, but don't totally tighten all at once. Tighten till they are snug, then use the torque wrench to tighten in sequence to the mfg. suggested torque. Usually in INCH pounds, not foot pounds.

Also, don't forget that the converters hold fluid also, so you won't get it all out as a DIY job. So when filling, don't rely on the capacity that the manual shows, as you will overfill it and that would be very
bad Fill almost to the dip stick, then start the truck, shift gears once, then most of them have you check the fluid in idle. Fill as indicated.

that is not totally right.... you can never judge oil by color. only by the viscosity and the texture. you could change your oil in you trans today and it could be black after 1 mile.
