Default problem..clutch/tranny?

my friends 88 bronco ii messed up the other day, he was shifting out of 2nd and it would not go into 3rd, he said as he was slowing down he tried to put it back in 2nd to get it off the road, it would not go back into 2nd, he said the clutch felt funny like it just went to the floor without much " rubber band" tension.

after he pulled it to his house i went to see if i could help, but i havent messed with a hydraulic clutch before. the fluid seemed low, but it didnt take but maybe 1/4 cup if that much to overflow when we put the rubber piece back in.

i pulled the rubber plug out of the transmission bellhousing, and saw that the slave cylinder was not moving much.

he told me that when he was trying to jam it into gear that it was not making any grinding noises which kinda threw me off, does this mean anything about the transmission?

I have seen the clutch disc break apart and get binded in between the pressure plate and the clutch plate and not allowing the disc to free wheel. You will have to take it apart to find the problem so good luck
