Thats retarded....why have O/D if 5th gear is O/D. Thats the dumbest sht I have ever heard of.

If 5th gear is only for O/D that means the truck can go faster in 4th gear than it can in 5th gear. After a little research, O/D is controlled by the computer on my truck so it is pointless to even mention it in the manual or on the dashboard.

I think you are extremely confused.

You have a manual transmission. 5th gear is your overdrive. There is no computer control, its a manual. You put it in whatever gear you want. And overdrive has nothing to do with speed.

On an automatic, it is automatic. There is a button on the shifter to disable overdrive if you want, for example while towing. The light on the dash to remind you that you have it off. Your light does nothing because you don't have an automatic. It has no function on your truck.

This is the way all vehicles, automatic and manual, have worked for the last 20+ years.

Overdrive is used to make a vehicle economical while reducing maximum power output. Overdrive adjusts the gear ratio in order to produce an efficient vehicle that can maintain higher speeds with better fuel economy for longer periods of time.....I am not confused.

it's on the dashboard and manual b/c ford uses the same cluster for several different models... i.e. same cluster for automatic and manual tranny's the blank spot in your cluster just above the steering column is for the gear selector in an automatic... ford does this to save money.... and keep their prices at a lower rate.... like my cluster has the selectors for 4x4 hi and low and my truck is a 4x2....

why is it stupid and ridiculous? it helps them keep their costs down by not having to design a different cluster for every vehicle they make.... which inturn helps keep the over all price down of the vehicles...... and makes it to where we can go out and get the white and silver cluster that make our trucks look hella good....

Especially when said lights that don't do anything are not even visible. Had you not disassembled the cluster, you would have never even known it was there. So the only thing ridiculous is you freaking out about this, which you clearly still don't even understand in the first place.

ROFLMAO......whatever dudes. I am not flipping out. American automakes have had the competitive advantage since the beginning of time! Foreign competitors have tarriffs that do not allow them to compete (finacially) with the domestic competition. Either way, I have disassembled the instrument cluster, and I do think it is ridiculous to have a useless "Gauge" on the instrument cluster that will never be used.

Confused, maybe not. Retarded, yes. You are the overdrive button in your truck. You shifting from 5th to 4th in your MANUAL truck is like me turning off the overdrive in my AUTOMATIC truck.

Sue Ford for them not redesigning their instrument clusters for every manual vehicle they've ever made. While you're at it, sue your parents for letting you eat lead paint chips when you were little.
