Default 5R55E Tranny Lockup Issues

97 Ranger 4.0L OHV 4x4 5R55E, transmission doesn't lockup & "go" at cruising speeds. When at say 45-55 if I take my foot off the gas and reapply it to accelerate transmission kicks back hard then if I stay in it it will go away and accelerate. Had a friend of a friend take it for a spin, said it needs a rebuild. I have no problems having a rebuild installed ($1800 quoted by my brothers friend who used to work at aamco) but was wondering if anyone else experiences this too. The general consensus I've seen is that these trannys are weak after 120k and seeing as tho I'm a 146 I know I'm overdue. Any insight or advice is appreciated as always thanks.

Try changing the tranny fluid filter and fluid. Drive it for a bit so you get through all the gears and repeat. It will take about 10 quarts but it might be all you need if you haven't changed the fluid and filter in a while.

Most people first try the fluid change method as suggested. However, if that does not work, then the most common problem these auto transmissions run into is with the valve body gaskets blowing out, as well as the solenoids failing. I would try a full valve body rebuild first before you pay 1800 for a rebuild that may not even be complete.
