Can someone explain how the throw-out bearing is removed from the transmission input shaft on a 1998 3.0 2wd 5 speed?
The T.O. bearing is backed up by a spring and slave cylinder and my manual gives no indication of proper removal.
Help is appreciated.

Usually you replace the slave and t/o bearing together. A new slave will had the t/o bearing already on it, and given the track record of the slave cylinders on these trucks, it's never a bad idea to change it when you already have the transmission out.

other than that, I'll go look at the slave I have sitting on the shelf and see if i can figure out how to get it off.

Ok, I just went out and removed the T/O bearing from my old slave cylinder. I just pulled and wiggled, and it slid right off. But I'm sure you've tried that, so a little persuasion with a screwdriver may be needed. It just slides off, and the new one lightly presses on.

Thanks. My clutch kit came with the T.O. bearing so I was going to replace it of course but, I agree it may not be a bad idea to go ahead and replace the slave cylinder as well.

^^yeah, thats why I have an extra t/o bearing. I decided to replace the clutch while doing my Slave.
