If a shear pin breaks what happens?
If the shear pin breaks in a 2wd what will it cause the truck to do?
reason I ask is i bought a used 98 ranger and i had to bring it back because something was wrong with the rear end, the dealer took it back and said it was simply a shear pin and he is replacing it for me for free.

Sher pin installed in a drive train it is suppose to break in case of a mechanical overload preventing more expensive parts from being damaged
A shear pin can be plain metal rod inserted through a hub and axle; the diameter of the rod is carefully chosen to allow the shearing action when the desired breakaway force or shock is reached. A cotter pin may also be used as a low-tech shear pin. Just like a fuse it has a sher pin and they break preventing that item to work causing more problems

usually a shear pin breaking in the rear end will cause the spider gears to stop functioning correctly. This could mean all loss of drive, or just a clunking grinding noise coming from the differential. Either way, it usually damages more than just the pin, often requiring replacement of the spider gears, and sometimes the ring and pinion.
BTW, that pin isn't designed to be a shear pin, it's not designed to break.

hmm ok well if it has damaged more than just the pin How much money roughly am I looking at if its spyder gears or the ring and pinion??

upwards of a grand after its all said and done.
I'm unsure why it's actually being called a shear pin. I've never heard it called that.....I've heard it only called 'center pin' or 'crosspin'. They aren't made to shear. If they shear, goodbye axle internals. And the reason it shears is you've got WAY more going on in that axle than just that pin. I'm thinking carrier failure or spider or side gear failure.

maybe he is refering to this bolt, or pin, that keeps the center pin from spinning with the rest of the gears. bolt head being red circle, yellow is where it pins the center pin.......
 my 84 k5 sheared the end right off of this pin, i was gonna swap in my suburbans rear end, but upon inspecting that pin was already sheared off also..... i had been driving the suburban for nearly 5 years, and it never really showed problems in the rearend..... but i ended up swapping in another that was in proper condition.

i have an 89' 2wd ranger,extended cab,2.9 six cylinder,no after market parts.all stock....nothing special at all lol.it's a one owner vehicle.my dad bought it brand new.it was his work truck for many years.then it was givin to my brother.who by no means what so ever treated it nicely...in other words the truck has seen way better days.the truck is now mine and not running very good

I have seen every chevy rear end I have tried to take apart have this bolt/pin sheared (where it holds the locking pin in place.
When I swapped out my Ford I was suprised how easy it was and that on both rears no sheared/broken parts

i have never seen that cross pin break not saying that it cant. i run demolition derby a lot and sometimes get stuck running a c-clip rear end. back in july this year i broke an axle. the axle broke right on the outside of the spider gear causing the axle to come out and the wheel fall off. after looking at the rear end i assumed that the pin has less stress than the axles making it very rare to break or even get damaged.
i would think that if you broke that pin, then you have more problems than just a pin. captain ramrod, that little bolt you are pointing out almost always breaks. they rarely cause any problems because nothing falls out and makes a problem. but they do break a lot.

the shear pin is the bolt, spider gears will fall out if center pin leaves its position, hopefully thats all it thats wrong with it.. Had a mustang that did that and caused no damage to other diff' parts..
