Default Tranny noise with clutch engaged

I have a 1998 2wd 3.0 ranger with a 5 speed manual transmission. Mileage is about 129000.
The transmission is making a metallic scraping sound (spinning / dry bearing??) when clutch pedal is engaged only. It is difficult to shift into any gear when truck is running. If truck is off - I can shift easily. The transmission does not slip.
Thoughts?

Sounds like you are loosing a throw out bearing.
Regretfully, that means you will be pulling your transmission.
Advice: Buy a clutch kit for your truck, it comes with a clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing, and alignment tool.
If you are spending the time to remove the transmission to change the throwout you should change the clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing and have the fly wheel surfaced.
That will prevent you from doing the job again soon.

Thanks for the input. The throwout bearing crossed my mind - but, I wasnt sure. The fact that the transmission shifts "smooth" while the engine is off seems to indicate that it is not within the transmission itself, correct?
Sounds like its time to drop the tranny and take a peek.

I better ask this, as i reread your post.
By engaged, you do mean with you foot holding the clutch pedal down, right?
If it is the other way, with the clutch pedal out, you may as well change the clutch stuff anyway, but the bearing sound you hear is probably the input shaft bearing in the transmission.
When I read your post the first time I just assumed you to be talking about when the clutch pedal was depressed.
YOU KNOW WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU ASSUME, DON'T YOU?

The slave cylinder is a know problem with Rangers. Replace it and the clutch if i is old and hope it doesn't go out as often as mine. 3 times in 4 years now.
