Default 2000 ford ranger 4x4 help

I just bought a 2000 ford ranger with 90000 miles 4x4 4 door mint for $2000.. the problem is the 4x4 high light is always on and 4x4 wont work?

So I have been playing with the truck I got the 4x4 light of but when I turn the switch to 4 low or high it will light up but wont go in ?

The switch is probly busted... Its a common thing that happens on trucks like ours.., another thing that it may be is the electronic motor that switches it from 2wd to 4wd ... Have a buddy turn the key on (not start it just the ignition) and have him turn it from 2wd to 4wd while you are listening to the motor at the back of the transfer case if it doesn't attempt to make a sound it's the switch, if you hear it attempting to move its the motor

Another thing I forgot to mention is if both are worKing than it is something up front.. Find out uf you have plus vac hubs or not.. If so the most common thing that goes is the vac line running along the transmittion (i forget which side) pricey part from ford but worth it for 4wd !!!!!!!!

I took the center cap off and pulled somthing out that was behind that and noticed that it would not lock it and would just let the cv shaft spin.. I locked it in with a punch and hammer now 4x4 works But I think the part I locked in is going to stay like that.... if this makes any sense

So you do have puls vac hubs if there is a plastic ring under the center cap.... I believe you can change just the plastic piece on those but im not to sure... I got lucky and got the electronic ones

So how do they work and do you know what is broke ? is there anyway I can change the style of them?

i believe you have the option of putting in standard manuel locking hubs, like those found on older rangers. those hubs are more reliable but more of a pain...( have to get out and lock the hubs) and i honestly have no clue what is broken.... as stated i do not have plus vac.... hopefully someone will chime in
