Default 4x4 Makes a whinning sound

Last night when leaving an abandoned field i hear an awful whinning/dust sheild like sound.

I finally realized it sounded like my transfer case. I also noticed that when i switched off 4x4 that it felt like it was still on. After maybe 2 mins of driving it suddenly quit. So by this point i made it to my house and to verify i hadn't just ran over something i looked under and then went around the block engaging 4x4 high again.

Sure enough as soon at the MSS was flipped to 4x4 and the solenoid engaged i heard the weird sound again. I'm going to check the transfer fluid but i swear i have had 4x4 high on at least once since i bought the truck and it never did that. If anybody knows what this is off the top of their head let me know asap.

I'm pretty skilled in this stuff but this is a first for me. 4x2 you get no sound, 4x4 high sounds like a scrapping heat sheild/whinning/flat tire sound.

well since nobody has made an attempt to reply i found the fluid in the front diff to be half a quart low and the fluid in the rear was also maybe half a quart.

4x4 no longer makes the god awful sound but on decel you can faintly hear a small whine. Nothing very noticeable but i'm hoping its air purging itself from the new fluid (80W-90) or wear on the spider gears from the low amount of fluid and the ******* that was going 45mph and didn't notice the sound at first

<-----------this guy.

I'm not the type of guy to just let stuff go but i think until the front differential has major issues i have no desire on wiggling it out to pop the cover off to just check the tooth wear pattern or any damage.

I'm going to change out the transfer case oil here in a weekend or so. The blackness bothers me so. Now on the '01 and up rangers when i switch out of 4x4 high do i need to stop to discontinue the drive to the front wheels or will the lock actuators switch back to 2wd by themselves?

I know at some point there was a change to the trucks at ford, i just have no real idea when the updated design was.
