Loosen all the bolts in the pan. Dont take them out. Then loosen just one side/corner and let it drain otherwise its gonna look like someone got murdered under the truck. Make sure you clean the pan out when its off. Change the filter for sure. They are cheap and you get a new tranny pan seal with them.

If you're going to drop the pan, may as well change the filter while you're under there.
If you've put in a drain plug in the pan, might only have to drop the pan and change the filter after every 2 or 3 flushes/fluid changes.
At least that's how it seems to me.

Gotta fill it back up through the tube in the engine compartment.
Put what ever the amount of fluid the manual says. Then start it up let the truck warm up and check it.

As stated, fill up through the dipstick tube.
When I drop the pan and change the filter, it takes about 4 - 4 1/2 liters of ATF to refill to spec - that's a 5r55e tranny.
------
For my tranny, capacity is listed as 9.8 liters = 10.3 quarts

Re: 2006 ranger 4.0 tranny fluid change
Not too bad at all if you have a hoist and can easily get to all the bolts . . .
Doable with the truck on jacks, but potentially messy - the ATF more than fills the pan, so when you drop the pan, well, just be ready for potential spills . . .
Clean out the old pan (I use "brake clean", "electrical parts cleaner" or something similar - you DON"T want anything that will leave a film which usually precludes any type of petroleum based cleaner), and the mating surfaces with the tranny; there will be some "gray stuff" in the bottom of the pan - clean that stuff out - it's fine metal particles from the tranny, pretty normal, but it should be "fine" - no "chunks" of anything please, that would be trouble . . .
If it's the first time the ATF and filter has been changed, there may be a small rubber plug in the bottom of the pan - it's a plug from the manufacturing process that keeps the tranny sealed until the ATF dipstick was emplaced . . .
Swapping the filter is straightforward - just don't lose the new o-ring for where the filter plugs in, sometimes the new bolt with the tranny kit needs a spacer (which usually comes with the kit, even if you don't need it - pretty easy to figure out) . . .
Lining up the gasket with the bolt holes is probably the hardest part of putting the pan back on - some mechanics will lay down a thin film of RTV silicone to hold the gasket in place - gotta wait 'til it's a little bit tacky and holds the gasket in place before you start threading the bolts (there are a whole bunch of those suckers, don't recall exactly how many, 18?, 20?, anyway, you don't want to misplace one) . . .
Get them all in and finger tighten . . .
Then it's just a matter of tightening them all up in an overall even pattern - think similar to tightening up heads - I usually torque them to about 100 in/lbs (spec calls for 96-120 in/lbs) . . .
Then just re-fill with required type and amount of ATF (through the dipstick - mine takes about 4 1/2 liters if I just drop the pan and change the filter) - I add about 3 to 4 liters, then check the dipstick, engine running, and gradually add the last 1/2 liter , so as not to overfill.
And that's about it; I've covered everthing I can think of (- if I've forgotten something, someone please chime in) - not really difficult - most difficult part is finding the time and determination to do it.
So that's about it, except for the "disclaimer" - so: "You follow these instructions at your own discretion and risk, and I, the writer, take no responsibility for any attempt to follow this outline."
If you take it to a shop it's about $100 CDN the last time I checked, but that was years ago - probably a lot more expensive these days.
Good luck with it if you decide to change it yourself.

Re: 2006 ranger 4.0 tranny fluid change
A lot of experienced mechanics don't torque the bolts - they develop a "feel" for the right amount of pressure - so I suppose it isn't absolutely necessary.
Still, a torque wrench is the only way that you will obtain an objective, accurate measurement.
Torquing to the right specs ensures that you aren't over- or under- tightening - pretty critical if you want to do it right.
Not using a torque wrench means you are taking a chance. If you get in the correct range, you won't have any leaks - if you don't, you may develop leaks over time, either through over- or under-tightening.
Your truck, your choice.

Re: 2006 ranger 4.0 tranny fluid change
I found that the cleanest way to drop the pan is to use a fluid extractor through the dipstick tube first–this will not drain the pan however!
Then with the pan supported by a floor jack, remove the bolts and slowly lower the pan less than an inch. At this point work around the edge of the pan and free the gasket completely. then lower the pan a little farther. it will impact either the transmission crossmember or the flange of the forward catalytic converter. From here you can use the fluid extractor to drain the pan.
I actually did two fluid changes about 500 miles apart, changing the filter on the second pan drop. I did this because I don't have the equipment to perform a full fluid flush through the coolant lines, at best I was able to change ~1/3 of the total system volume at a time.

What about for manual trannys without a dipstick, what is the best way to fill them back up?

Re: 2006 ranger 4.0 tranny fluid change
manuals typically have a fill plug on the side, that you fill to the bottom of. using a pump or squeezing the tits off the gear oil bottle.
