The check engine light comes on and stays on when a problem is detected by the self diagnosis system of your vehicle.
Generally, a check engine light is lit when there is a problem in the emissions or somthing that is affecting the effectiveness of the emissions.
If the check engine light is flashing a misfire has been detected

Surging RPMS when under a load such as the A/C sounds to me like the Idle Air Control Valve. However those don't tend to throw codes. You could have more than one problems. Get that code checked out to see what it says.

well the first step, you should take a code reader to your vehicle ( i used a test light and wire)
the amount of blinks is the same as the number it gives you and should continue going in a continues circle.
Anyways, do that first see what it says. if that doesn't help you can try..

take a can of starting fluid and spray around your engine while its running. please watch where you spray!!! (in other words kaboom if the wrong spots) try and get close into the spots to see if there is a leak.

your truck will idol really really funny if you spray and there is a leak or something wrong. I can't guarantee anything and please be careful. that may be a main issue is a leak. who knows.

you can try that for starters ..

who needs AC lol jk
