clutch or rear end issues

I am new to this forum but am hoping someone can help me out. I was on my way to the hospital to see my husband and my 93 ford ranger made a terrible clunking sound and then just quit. I was stuck in gear and unable to push out of road- I managed to get it in neutral and push off the road but still would not go anywhere. My neighbor looked at it and said that he thought it was the throw out bearing and after playing with the gears was able to drive it to my house which was only a couple of blocks. When we got here he could not get the truck to nove in reverse. He said it appeared that the shifter was shifting but would not move the truck. Any suggestions?
