Re: regearing for 31's on my 2.3l
31s on a 2.3L with 3.73 gears this is what will happen:
Definetely forget about 5th Gear, its useless.
When trying to pass someone in the highway forget it.
When starting up on a hill like on a light, good luck.
Your clutch will wear up quickly.
Yes 31s can be turned with 3.73 gears, but slow acceleration, lots of added stress to tranny, engine, diff will also follow.
YOU NEED A MINIMUM OF 4.10 GEARS, DO IT RIGHT.
Imagine this:
31s on a 4 cyl ranger sitting at a red light, light turns green, YOULL RIDE CLUTCH EXCESSIVELT TO GET IT TO MOVE.

4.10s yes. 4.56, no, way too excessive.

Re: regearing for 31's on my 2.3l
HEY 2004xlmiller
FRF Smart He has a 4 cyl 2.3 L.
THE PROPER WAY TO DO IT FOR RELIABILITY AND FOR ACCELERATION AND TO MINIMIZE WEARING OUT CLUTCH IS TO GET AT LEAST 4.10 GEARS 4.56 GEARS IDEALLY TO LEAVE FUTURE ROOM FOR SOME 32S MAX. 31S ON 3.73 ON A 4 CYL.... SLOW AS A MADAFAKA.

Re: regearing for 31's on my 2.3l
dude ive been over this a hundred times. 4 banger or not hes gonna do fine with his gears. this guy here, only has a 3.Slow and hes pushin 35s with 4.56. you recomendation for 31s was this ratio. rethink it before you go offering people bs advice.

Re: regearing for 31's on my 2.3l
I know this is old but 2010 your wrong. I have 31s with 3.73s and I've been riding like this for over a year now no issues.

Re: regearing for 31's on my 2.3l
I hope u dont drive through steep hills. Straight aways sure no problem. take the 4 cyl add 31s and 3.73 and add some hills to the mix, I am talking real hills and youll agree with me its not gonne be able to pass that good.

Re: regearing for 31's on my 2.3l
im sorry. but any claim to 31's with 3.73s is BS. From personal experience, 3.73 had trouble turning 235's (could not run 5th) so you have got to be running the shit out of that truck.
For 4 bangers, 4.10 for 28"-30" 4.56 for 30"-32" I would not even go 4.56 in the 7.5". Which in most cases, the 4cyl will have. Your pinion is getting pretty small at 4.56 for that rear end.
