Default Spool for 2002 FX4 front diff?

From what I have researched the 2001 and newer rangers have a live axle. It seems to me the "live axle" means the hubs are permanantly engaged and the only "break" in the system is the transfer case (please correct me if I am mistaken). In that case a spool for the front axle would cause tire chirp even in 2H and would be useless, however if Im mistaken the hubs just have a different means of engaging from the auto hubs of previous years and the spool would be the easiest and cheapest way to lock the front end...but I dont know which is true, so I turn to the mechanical genius of anybody here to help me sort out fact from fiction.

you are correct, the 01+ front end is a live axle meaning a spool would be worthless because the left wheel would be permanently locked to the right wheel making it nearly impossible to turn on dry pavement whether in 2 or 4 wheel drive. There are no locking hubs on a live axle at all.

Ok thanks I wasnt sure. If I was wrong and the hubs did disengage a spool/mini spool up front would have been awesome! Just pop it in 4wd and im locked up front...truely unfortunate that that isnt how it works. How in difficult is a manual hub converson? Is it possible on a live axle?

I would only do it if the hubs disengaged when I was in 2wd. Then I would know as soon as I put it in 4wd it would be locked up front which would be great while off roading or on the icey hills here in CO
