Default grinding in 2WD notin 4WD

My truck has recently started grinding while in motion, but only in 2 wheel drive. Once I switch to 4 Wheel drive, the noise goes away. I check the transfer case fluid, and changed it, but I am still getting the noise. I talked to someone at the auto parts store and they thought I might have a chipped gear. I was also wondering if if it could be a busted hub. Anyone have any thought about what it could be?

I have a 1999 6 cylinder 4.0 4wd extended cab.

My driver side front wheel would grind really bad from time to time, and throwing it in 4x4 would make it go away. I dont think a 99 has the same hubs as my 97 but its a good place to start, as since I changed em, the grinding has stopped.

Is there a way to check the hubs before I replace them, I just want to avoid dumping money into something that isn't the problem. Someone suggested jacking the truck up and then spinning the wheel by hand, would that work?

Im not sure on your year. I know my truck, you pull the wheel off and the hub just pulls out, and you can check inside it. In my case, the plastic parts where shatered.
