Try hitting the drum with a hammer really hard.

first thing you should do is jack the rear end off the ground and spin the tires by hand, then when you know for sure what one is dragging take the drums off and look to see if you can see anything visibly wrong.

Just pull the wheel off then slid the drum part off. However if the e-brake is stuck it will be held on super tight. That is why I suggest hitting it to disengage it.

the parking brake cable going to the right rear tire is siezed up...o sprayed it wait some wd40 and wiggled it so that it dosent catch...that and a mix of hitting with a BFH seemed to fix my problem temporarely..

probably be doing new rear drums in the future just to be safe but for now i disconnected the cable

I'm on my third consecutive Ranger to have problems with the parking brake locking. I live in an area where the roads are salted heavily, and have found the parking brake cables (particularly the short one after the Y-connector that leads to the rear driver's side wheel) corrode and lock up, causing the parking brake to stay locked. I'm replacing that cable for the second time on my '03 (lesson learned, don't cheap out on a replacement cable).

Had the same problem pop up in my 99 xlt this morning. Thanks for the tips! Hey ebztz, which brand of cable did you wind up being satisfied with?

I have yet to carry out the second replacement. I'm thinking of buying a factory Ford cable. I'm not sure what brand aftermarket cable I had, but the terminations were smaller and didn't seat well, and the cable housing cracked as well.

Whatever replacement I use, I think I'm going to inject grease into the cable ends. Hopefully packing the sleeve will keep out salt and water.

I'd suggest a hard rubber mallet, unless you want to accidentally buy another drum.

I ended up purchasing a Dorman 660241 cable for less than $20 from Rockauto. This cable looks to be constructed well and was much less expensive than the factory cable.

i had the same problem on my ranger right rear siezed up and wouldnt allow truck to move. althoght when you syomp on the gas it breaks free, its not real safe. i simply took my drum off and disconnected the e brake cable took the components out pulled e brake cable thru back of housing and ties it to underbody of truck. problem solved. for good. lol
