Default something is clunking!!!

hello!
i have a 07 ranger xlt 4x4 4.0 manual. i have had the truck for about 3 months now and my wife and i just took our honeymoon to florida. on the way there it started making a clunking noise whenever i take a load off/put a load on the rear end. it does it the worst from 1-2. the best way i can describe it is that it seems like something is "smacking" back together whenever i enter or leave a gear. i have removed the driveshaft and checked the ujoints and they seem solid.
any help is appreciated.
thanks

chock the front wheels put it in 1st gear and jack a back tire off the ground see if you can wiggle it and make it do that noise.

possibly differential backlash out of spec (too high in this case.)

Is there any way i can check the backlash?

I re-greased the slip yoke and it is somewhat quieter but i can still hear/feel it when i push the clutch in real fast.

crawl under the truck on a flat surface with it in neutral, parking brake set.

unscientific method:
try twisting the driveshaft, if it moves alot, theres too much play in the rear end. you should also hear the same clunking noise. some play is normal, though. its probably only a problem if you can move it enough to recreate the sound. mine does it pretty bad from drive to reverse, but its an automatic.

the only way to tell for sure is to remove the diff cover and measure the non-contact play between the pinion and the ring gear with the appropriate gauge.

I have some play in the drive shaft and I hear a lot of movement in the rear end when I move it. I can't recreate the sound without driving it. I live at an apartment and dont have many resources at my call so I think I'm just going to baby it till I can get it to ford Tuesday.

What? when is it typical for a 4 year old truck to make a noise in the rear.... Typical ford service, they send you on your way with a smile and no repairs... I wouldnt deem this acceptable. Its an annoying sound that wasnt present when the truck was new, then ford should fix it.
