Default 5r55E Transmission Question

Hi Y'all. I'm new to this forum and new to the Ford Ranger. I just purchased a 2003 Ranger 4X4 4dr Supercab automatic with 4.0l engine and 75000 miles. The only problem I have found is with the 1st to 2nd gear shift. It is very harsh. All other shifts are OK, except there seems to be no coast clutch in position 1, but it is there in 2 and D. OD seems to be fine and the transmission fluid is "red" and no burnt smell. I don't have any apparent slippage in any gear. The level on the dipstick is between the two holes when cold and on the XXXXXs when hot. What do you tihnk is wrong? I don't want to hurt the tranny when hopefully something fairly simple would fix it. Thanks in advance for your help.

Jim

I have a 03 4X2 auto with the 3.0 and it does the same thing with mine. For some reason certain years with the V6 engines are like that. Ive also heard of some kit that you can get for the tranny that helps it slide better but i cant remember what its called or anything.

Thanks for the response. Sounds like I need to find the kit you referred to. This 1-2 shift is very hard, and I'm concerned it could cause a tranny failure.
I've been told these trannies could have valve body problems, but that is not confirmed by me. Have y'all heard that before, and, if so, is this something I could do at home?

I would try a couple things. First, try some full synthetic tranny fluid (Amsoil, Royal Purple, Mobile 1). It has worked wonders on my rangers tranny. Second, check the slip yoke and lube it with white lithium grease or heavy duty silicone lubricant. The slip yoke usually causes clucks when you coming to a stop or accelerating from a stop, which could mask itself as the shift form first to second gear.

If I remember correctly the gears are as follows. First-First O/D-Second-Third-Third O/D. If this is correct and it is a tranny problem it should shift hard into First O/D (what we feel as second) and Third O/D (what we feel as Fifth). Hope this helps.

The kit is called a "shift correction kit". Ford recommended their installation on both the 4R55e as well as the 5R55E. This transmission comes from the A4LD used in the 80's and mid 90's. Durring the upgradt to the newer models, the valve bodies show fluid flow issues and can be completely repaired by buying the 50 dollar kit. It is easy to do, but you will need another filter, pan gasket and 4 1/2 quarts of fluid.

Where would you be able to get your hands on "said" kit?

The Kit can be bought threw any transmission shop or online supply. The one I use is a TransGo Part number is T56165H. This kit will service the following transmissions:4R44E, 4R55E AND 5R55E. I also recommend replacing the EPC solenoid while you are doing this and already there. The part number for the EPC is A56431A That is a BorgWarner part number.

Thanks for the info on that Lonncarr. I'd say this is definitely a must have.

Hello,

I'm a noobie in the forum. My dad gave me his 2003 Ranger XLT. It's 2.3 4 cyl 2whl drive automatic and 205k miles. The O/D off light is blinking and the shifts are hard or sometimes delayed. Also it is not shifting into O/D at freeway speed. Will this kit and replacing the EPC solenoid cure the issue?

Thanks in advance.
Ray

Yes, It sure will....You have all the symptoms. Please understand that the longer the vehicle is driven like this, with these issues, the greater the chance there is permanent internal damage.
