Default Clunk when I hit the gas from a stop

The truck in question is a 2000 Ranger XLT 4x4, 3.0L V6, auto transmission. When I am at a stop and I hit the gas to start moving, about a half second after I hit the gas there is a clunk like something is slamming into gear. If I take my foot off the brake but don't hit the gas to let it creep forwards it doesn't clunk until I actually hit the gas. I'm not really sure what this could be, and how serious it is. I tried searching but I couldn't come up with much. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

couldn't it be a u-joint? the second you apply some torque to the drive shaft it could "clunk"

doubt it unless he has a lot of vibration, sounds like a motor mount. pop the hood with the truck running and reve it up from the TB see if the motor moved a lot, and look at the mounts.

I'm not experiencing any noticeable vibration. I'll try checking the engine mounts. Are there any good DIYs out there for replacing those?

I would check U-joint aswell, there super easy, crawl under there and grab it, turn it left-right you will tell right away if its that

my old explorer did this thing where you would feel it through the pedal/floor like that and ford after 1000 bucks could never figure out why

Sounds more to me like a u-joint. And you won't nessicarily feel vibrations in the truck if your u's are going, but I've got the same clunk, and it's my u-joint. Also had it in many trucks in the past.

Ok, I finally got around to looking things over. This isn't my primary vehicle in the summer months. I grabbed the rear driveshaft and tried to move it around but there was no play in it whatsoever. The front driveshaft on the other hand rotated a bit, maybe 3-5 deg. The u-joints appear to be ok, the play was coming from inside the front diff as far as I could tell. Is that much play bad? Also, is there any way to change the diff fluid (front or rear)? I didn't see a drain or fill plug.

I also tried revving the engine from the throttle body but the engine didn't move any more than it should when I did this. Something I still need to try that a friend suggested, is to have someone rev it up in drive while holding the brakes (so a load is applied) to see if it clunks. I'll post my findings when I do that.

x2

Ford sells a grease pack for it, dirt cheap. I'm assuming you have a steel shaft and not the aluminum one?

I don't know, I would assume steel. It's rusty.

I checked this and it didn't clunk. It has to be the front driveshaft or diff, I just don't know why. It seemed internal to the front diff when I turned the driveshaft with my hand. The front diff doesn't whine or make any other strange noises.

Mine does the same thing, I've heard it was my carrier bearing, or a slip yoke. When I have it at my mechanic on Wednesday for slop in my steering, he's gonna take a look at that as well. I'll let you know if I come up with anything.

From RS:

Problem: "I hear a 'thud' noise when I start and stop."

Solution #1: This is caused by a driveshaft slip-spline that was inadequately lubricated at the factory. All it needs it a sufficient quantity of Moly-type CV joint grease liberally slathered on (and inside) the spline (it's probably about a 20 minute job to pull the driveshaft, lube it and then reinstall it). Some have drilled the slip yoke and put a grease fitting in to grease it during regular maintenance.

Cool, thanks for that information. Definitely let me know what your mechanic says, I'd appreciate it.
