Default 4X4 Front Diff Noise

I've put a couple thousand miles on this rig now - its about 70K - and am hearing what sounds like gear mesh noise from the front axle. The 4X4 drive works great and it cruises correctly in 2WD. Its just a mild groan and not pervasive, but it is consistently there and may be getting a little louder with time. I'm pretty certain its not wheel bearings, but I'm not familiar enough with Rangers to know if this groan is normal, if I should lubricate something, or if I should start saving for new hardware. Any ideas?

Maybe have your hubs checked, or check the fluid in the front diff

Diff/Ring/Pinion setups are expensive

Take it to a shop, make them investigate the front axle hubs/ wheel bearings/ u joints/ and diff itself.

Some gear problems can be impossible to see unless your a differential-guy until it blows up.

is it a speed consistent humming noise? mine is doing it and it wasn't the wheel bearing. I flushed the front differential and refilled with new gear oil and the sound is still there. im thinking its something in the rear but i can hear it clearly in the cab which is why i thought at first it was a wheel bearing. i replaced them both anyway though 187 a piece for timkens.

if you want to check the wheel bearing/ hub just jack up the truck and check for play

Good gouge, all! I'll get it to a buddy who is an experienced mechanic tomorrow. Any suggestions for a Ranger specialist in the DC metro area?
