Default BW1354m

Is there anyway to tell which 1354m is 4 pinion or 6 pinion without taking it apart?

Are you talking about the planetarys? All 1354s are 6. Unless you are asking something else....

Yes, planetaries, I was thinking one thing writing another, sorry.
I was told that all 1350's had 4, and not all 1354's had 6, that is the reason for the question.
Thanks for the reply.

As far as I know all 1354s have 6 gear planetaries and all 1350s have 4. I have never seen anything saying differently, but Ford has been known to do stranger things. I would feel confident that any 1354m would have the 6 gear planetary.

Did you hear that on TRS? A few guys there said the same thing recently.

No, as a matter of fact, I heard it here, but I haven't been able to find the thread and can't remember who made the statement.
You know how it is when you get old!
I have had a 1350 ever since I bought my B2, came with naturally, and it has never given a problem. Now I am putting in a 4.0 "X" with a M50D-R1 and picked up a 1354m yesterday.
Just wondering if this is a 4 or 6 planetary and how one might tell with out taking the case apart. Which I am not going to do, looking and feeling threw the fill and drain holes, it looks like it was either not used much, or recently rebuilt, it is covered in oil though, )the guy who pulled it said the engine was toast). The chain is tight, which really surprised me.
I am just curious, but I'm going to install it anyway, whenever the rain gives up.

Thank you, I knew some one would keep track of my absentmindedness, I honestly forgot I had posted that over there, I went and checked that post the following day and got busy doing other things and never went back.
Yeah, I get to retire next year, we'll see how long that lasts. No work, nothing to do, I will have to go find another job just to get away from my wife of 40 years.
Thanks again Jay.

Picked up a 1354m last Tuesday. (Wrecking yard)
Fellow at the a local transmission shop says all 1350 and 1354's are 4 planetary until you get into the 2000 and newer.
He also added that the real strength difference between the 1350 and 1354 is the size of the planetary, in the 1354, 30% more strength.

Glad to hear you scored one so easily. What year truck did it come out of?

It's out of a 91 X, was really oily when I got it, but cleaned nice.
The guy that pulled it said the engine was an oil bomb and it must have been driven that way for a while.
Pulled the fill plug, the oil looks outstanding, nice red color, has good lubricity to it, the chain is tight!!, and it shifts good. So maybe it is a good one.
I also picked up a M50D-R1 out of another 91 X the day before, it has a tag on it that says manufactured 2006, still trying to figure out if that be new manufacture or rebuild date, anyway, it is just as clean with nice oil in it to.
Hopefully I got some good parts, will find out when I get my B2 going, next spring I think.
