The Torsen is a geared type limited slip diff and the Traction Lok is a clutch type LSD. Geared units usually require far less maintenance while the Traction Lok needs periodic rebuilds to renew the clutch plates.

The Torsen option also included a heavy duty axle assembly with larger diameter axle tubes, larger bearings and stronger 31-spline axles vs the standard 28-splines used with the Traction Lok and other Ranger axles.

2008/9 axle codes:

R8 = Torsen 8.8, 4.10, 31-spline, 3600lb GAWR
R7 = Traction Lok 8.8, 4.10, 28-spline, 2750 GAWR

Prior years:

R7 = Any limited slip 4.10 8.8 Ranger axle, Traction Lok or Torsen

If everything goes right I should be getting this 08 FX4 this weekend. I know it has the 4.10 rear end with LS buthow would I know if it was originally ordered with the Torsen diff? Where would I find the code?

the code of the diff should be found on the diff itself, but I think it should be on the sticker of the door as well iirc

The shorthand R7 or R8 axle code will be on the Certification Label on the driver side door jamb. The axle itself has a more complicated labeling method.

Talk to the salesman and he said the sticker reads R8, so it the torsen rear end. Great! This truck is esentially a Level11, It has the torsen rear end, heavy duty shocks, tow package, the 3 skid plates, buckets, 6cd changer. Doesn't say Level 11 because there wasn't an actual level 11 in 08, just the FX4. Only thing it doesn't have are the Alcoas and leather.

sounds like a sweet rig, those alcoas and leather seats could be added with time with little effort.

Yea, I really like the look of the grey leather seats.Probably next to impossible to find. Either the Alcocas or a set of the American Racing. They look pretty good. This is the interior
