that sounds like the slave cylinder line.. Its not a cable it is a hose for the fluid, and yes there is a plastic clip in there that holds it in.
That is the only thing i can think of.. I just did a trans on same set- up. On that side of the trans is the slave cylinder line, the bleeder above it. fill and drain plugs on that side of the trans.....

That is your speedometer cable and if its actually leaking from there it as simple as replacing an O-ring.
Im currently replacing the clutch on my 93 and my tranny looked as nasty as yours when I pulled it out and I thought the same as you as my speedo cable area was really messy.(just like yours)
I mounted it on a engine stand and started gettin it ready to pressure wash when I found my leak.
If you look in your second picture, there is star shaped mechanism just forward of the cable you are looking at and it has a tab sticking off of it that gets bolted to the side of the trans.
That bolt was gone on my trans and that star shaped gizmo was about to fall out of the trans and the O-ring in it was exposed.
I found a bolt that fit and pushed the star shaped gizmo back to where it used to be some loctite on the bolt and bolted it up.
Now your star shaped gizmo looks good to go in the picture and actually looks cleaner than the rest of the trans so im wondering if maybe a former owner had found this and fixed it and just didnt clean up the mess when he or she was done?
Me, I plugged up all the holes and pressure washed the snot out of it and then treated to a can of Ford Blue engine paint.
I figure doing this would make it alot easier to spot any future leaks.
Hope this helps?

i dont think its leaking from the start bolt, it look slike its coming from the seal where the shifter is and where the electrical plug is just near the speedo cable. If you look really close in pic#2 you can see a kind of C-clip that isnt snapped into a designated place. Ill try to clean it while its under the truck still and try to spot where the oil is coming the most i guess.
