Trans slipping...bad
So i have been trying to revive this 96 2.3 auto for a few months. I have just about everything worked out except the trans. Since i got the truck it has slipped out of 2nd. At 1 point it had a CEL, i pulled the code and it said "P0761". This led me to believe i had a faulty shift solenoid. After replacing the solenoid the problem is still there, and a little worse. Now when i start the truck in the morning and put it in drive it will just rev. If i put the truck into first it will pull off. By the time i get to the end of the street i can put it back into drive and all is fine until it tries to shift out of 2nd and into 3rd. If i am using sturdy pressure on the gas, it will just rev like it was slipped into neutral. I usually let off of the gas at the end of the gear and let the trans kind of fall into 3rd, and this works fine. I have been pricing junk yard transmissions around my area, but to be honest if i am missing something easy to fix i would love to try to save this one. the truck has 400,000 miles on it, so i know the trans is going to have to be rebuilt/replaced soon enough.
P.S. This is what led me to believe the solenoid was faulty...

Um... 400,000 miles, your better off getting a rebuilt trans, why put the money into this one when you think its going to need to be rebuilt/replaced soon. Hey but thats your decision
But anyways, basic but overlooked thing, have you checked the fluid levels?

Re: Trans slipping...bad
Yea, it's getting close to being done for the day if it's never been rebuilt. BUT, if you're anything like me, you still want to know. Just because Code P0761 has to do with Shift Solenoid C does not necessarily mean the solenoid is bad. You could have a faulty connection to the solenoid, faulty channel to that specific solenoid, a broken terminal to that solenoid you may have overlooked, a wire to that solenoid could be shorting out, O/D circuit issues, etc. Lost and lots of things can be wrong because of that code. These transmissions are heavily electrical, and the electrical stuff should be isolated first because often times it can be the main cause of trouble. As stated check the continuity, check voltage, check for visual abrasions on the wiring, broken terminals, etc. When you drain the fluid, check the fluid for shavings. Check the magnet for shavings. If you have alot of shavings, then something in the transmission itself is disintegrating. So basically, you have two channels to investigate, Electrical and Mechanical.

Thanks for the reply and advice. I think i'm just going to have to replace the thing, it doesn't seem like it is worth all of the trouble. There are a few junk yards in m area that offer 90 day warranty's on transmissions they sell.

Re: Trans slipping...bad
So my mystery trans slip has fixes itself. The problem is, I checked the trans fluid dip stick and it is reading empty. Should i fill the trans up and risk it slipping again, or run her dry?

Why would I put a manual in it? It will never be a "fast" truck, it's just my DD.
