1996 2.3 5 speed clutch issues / testing
150k, been very reliable / rock solid since she got it (except for the damn left door ajar issue)
Complained it was hard to shift.
Test drove, pedal is soft and goes completely to floor. Hard to shift issue is intermittent, shifts fine, then grinds, then shifts fine. Also noticed an intermittent whine from the tranny when the clutch is depressed.
Checked fluid, reservoir was empty but there was fluid in the line. Doubtful it's ever had any added in 15 years.
Ran 32 oz of DOT 3 thru it, getting the old black as coal fluid out. Saw no leaks.
Bled at the slave with a vacuum pump, good flow.
After all this, fine at first, then same exact problem.
Disconnected line from slave to isolate master from slave.
Pedal is now rock hard. This means master is fine and has no air in it, correct?
Slave bleeder holds 15 psi of vacuum. There is a slow leak if I wiggle the line.
Is it possible the slave would not leak fluid but leaks air back into itself?
Tranny has never been dropped, all original. If I have to drop it I am replacing every thing.
I see 2 kits, non self adjusting and self adjusting. Hydraulic would use the non self adjusting, correct?
