I checked this morning after changing the transmission fluid and I have a slight leak from the drain plug, I am a little skittish about tightening these as the housing is aluminum. Does soemone have the torque specs for these? Thanks, Dave

if that doesnt do the trick, try a thin wrap of teflon tape or permatex on the threads.

36 lb-ft is the spec in the 2003 manual. IIRC, the plugs have aluminum crush washers that seal under the heads. After the plugs have been tightened a few times, the washers get work hardened and might need to be replaced to stop the drips.

Thanks guys. I thought about the teflon AFTER I put the bottom plug in place. I have bumped the nut three times but am afraid to go tighter and strip the threads so.....I will loosen and re-torque to 36 Ft. Lbs. If that doesn't work I'll drain and teflon the threads and then refill....so much work! I do appreciate the help. Dave

Teflon tape is intended for tapered threads that squeeze the tape as the parts are tightened. An example would be the tapered pipe plugs used in Ranger differential housings.

The M5OD transmission has non-tapered threads on the drain and fill plugs. Using the factory sealing washers will seal them better than teflon tape.
