Default Double clutching on a Ford Ranger 2004?

I'm looking at buying a 2004 Ford Ranger, 2WD standard, 77k miles on it. When test driving it, shifting up in gears is fine and solid, but dropping from 5th gear to 4th gear takes a double clutching to shift into the gear. Dropping from 5th to 3rd is fine, just the drop from 5th to 4th takes the effort. Is this a normal problem with a Ranger? Is this indicative of any sort of engine problem? If so, is it a serious problem that needs to be fixed that moment, or is it something that I could work on over time?

Not sure what you mean here by "double clutching,"

Double clutching refers to shifting down a gear, first disengaging the clutch and shifting the transmission into neutral range, then engaging the clutch and accelerating the engine momentarily, then disengaging the clutch again and shifting into a lower gear and releasing the clutch. It's done to either save wear on the synchros or to downshift a transmission that doesn't have syncros and would otherwise grind the gears. It's also done sometimes in racing to help "cushion" the downshift when compression braking on corner entry.

If you have to double clutch to downshift it's a sign that the transmission 4th gear syncro has a problem. It's has nothing to do with the engine condition. It also might have something to do with clutch adjustment, if the clutch is too tight and isn't disengaging all the way. You should have it looked at by a good mechanic.

Do you live in the UK mate? I work on Ford Rangers all day long and have done for 2 years now and I've never once seen any transmission problems (apart from a seized front propshaft - but that was on 4x4 obviously). I suppose you could check for any leaks from the gearbox underneath, especially around the bungs as these may of not been replaced properly whilst changing the transmission fluid. Of the top of my head I think the gears are a bit sticky but thats just the feel of the car. The engines are bombproof (Mazda), only thing to watch for on rangers is front wheel bearings, seized brake calipers and rear suspension components in my experience.
