Default Reverse = Thudd (dirveshaft or U joints?)

Ive got a 2007 automatic FX4 129,000 KMS. I think I have a problem with my drive shaft or U-Joints? Anyone have this issue. I appreciate any feedback..

I'm noticing a loud thud/jerk when I engage reverse only. First comes the thudd and a light vibration for a second or so..

Problem with your tranny, last time it has been serviced?

I would flush trans again, you don't know if he used merc V or not. Possible he put in merc III, it will eat your trans quick like. Better safe than sorry IMO, $60 or so for some merc V, new filter and see what happens

----------

If it was a U-joint it would "clunk" in drive also. Slide underneath your truck, grab the shaft and see if there is any slop, looks like you have a newer ranger, I doubt the u-joint is bad already

----------

put it in "N" shift from N to R then N to D. Note if and when it "clunks" if only does it in R, than trans fo sho!

My truck has done this since it had 8 miles on it. Everything checks out mechanically. I'm gonna get an appointment to get the ECM reflashed.

^^ Good info. I'm still going to get it looked at. Seems a bit more then a delayed shift. More of a hard shift..

I tracked down the tranny in the truck should be model 5R55E. I imagine it would not change on a FX4

R44E/5R55E - Automatic Transmission:

The 5R55E is a computer controlled rear wheel drive automatic transmission used in 1997 and newer Ford Rangers and is identified by transmission code 'D'. This is a computer controlled rear wheel drive overdrive transmission.

The 5R55E, though mechanically identical to the 4-speed 4R55E, was a five-speed transmission, the first produced by an American maker. The ability to produce five forward gears is by improved software control. The 5R55E introduced adaptive shift control and sophisticated friction to friction shift ability. The 5R55E introduced Directional high energy frictions and eliminated all but one thrust washer with high-capacity thrust bearings. It was the first 5-speed electronically controlled transmission in an American vehicle. It was designed for the high-torque 4.0 L SOHC and 4.0 L OHV Cologne SOHC V6.

Gear Ratios:

1st = 2.47:1

2nd = 1.87:1

3rd = 1.47:1

4th = 1.00:1

5th = 0.75:1

Reverse = ?.??:1
