Hurst shifter question
Hey guys, I was shopping around trying to find a Fx4 LvlII shifter and have found out that they are next to impossible to find . I have how ugly the OEM shifter is and a hurst seems like a decent alternative but I hvae no idea how they work and how they compare to the OEM (I imagine they are improvement. Does it only make it make it a more direct shift, does it add better feel? I found this thread but It doesnt really help to answer my questions.
Hurst Shifter......... Comments PLEASE!!!

Re: Hurst shifter question
It still fits. I personally love my hurst. Shifter are shorter and firm. Doesn't take much effort to shift either. Its the best mod you can do if you are body lifted. However if you are op to get the longer shift arm.

the hurst will still fit, theres no reason it shouldnt. The hurst is a short throw shifter so it should make your shifts obviously shorter and more direct, and acourse it looks much better. But you will get alil more road noise and sounds through it. Good way to go if you can work out the venting problem and making sure it doesnt leak.
The fx4 level 2 isnt any shorter of a throw, its strictly for looks. While it does look good you will not find one for sale thats in good shape, and if you do it will not be for a cheap price. If you happen to pull that off then you are the luckiest person alive. The only option really is ordering through ford, and it is NOT cheap.

Its good to know about the road noise of the hurst. Is it difficult to install? i have read that some members had to create custom brackets of some sort to mount these. The fx4 shifter was because I liked the looks, nothing more but a short throw shifter would be an added bonus at half the price of the OEM fx4 shifter. I am just not 100% a fan of how the hurts looks like but its better then what I have now.

Install is simple. Make sure the truck is in neutral. Then there is 4 bolts holding the stock shifter in place. Take the stock out and install the hurst with 4 bolts. Once its in you have to adjust you shift stop point which is easy. It comes with instructions. Like I said before you might like the longer arm more. Here is a picture of mine. Given I am BL'd so it sits about 2-3" lower then it would in a non bl'd truck, but right now its in the perfect location.

Being BL'd the extension that came with it gave me super sloppy shifts. I felt like I was fishing for each gear. Now I have no slop, tight shifts. Its a night a day difference from stock and even bigger from the BL extension to the hurst. I want one bad in the 98. The kit was around 200 from summit then another 75 for the new arm. You might be able to call and order it with the longer arm instead, but I am not sure.

I made my own out of 1/4" aluminum stock and bolted it in place. Works like a dream.
I'll take pics of my setup and post them in here tomorrow.

Edgeman thanks for the help, look forward to pics.
I was just curious Sonic whatd you do with yours, did you still keep using the extension that came with the body life?
Also whatd you do about the venting problem? any leaking or noise complaint?

No I didn't need too. The base of the hurst is about 3" taller then the stock base plate. So It pretty much took care of the gap for the BL and the longer arm put the shifter in a more comfortable place. The one from the BL wont work with the hurst. You could use the stock arm, but I drove with one with the stock arm and it was more reach then I wanted.

Re: Hurst shifter question
well if you want a longer shifter, you can buy different size and different style hurst shifter sticks off of summit racing. the stock shift stick that they give you in the kit is too short and i always feel like im reaching to shift my gears so i got a hurst shifter stick that is 12 inches long and has a layback of 7.5 inches so its closer to you. heres the link, http://www.summitracing.com/parts/HUU-5388022/
