Default 96 Ranger Grinding/Scratching noise

i went to a mechanic and he noticed a scratching, almost like a grinding but more a light scratching and he said that it was my rear axle bearings going out but i had someone else look at it and we un hooked the drive line and it made the same noise just louder without the drive line connected.... he thought it might be the bushing in the cone end of the transmission... any suggestions? throw anything at me i need to know its killing me! im new to the vehicle world and this is my first truck so be easy on me

i just bought it and from what i can understand it was owned by an older lady.... so i dont think that it was in water alot, but we took off the drive shaft and it still made the same noise just a little bit louder and that kinda rules out anything to do with the rear end cause there was no power to the rear end at that point..... any other suggestions

Take the wheels off, then grab the drum and turn it, if it scraps thats the problem. The drums should be on fairly tight. Take the drums off and inspect the shoes/drum. Might be a broken spring in there also
