Default Ring Gear and Pinion

Hey guys, first post here, but have a little problem..I have a 95 Ford ranger 4x4 and as long as i've had it (5years) the 4x4 has made an awful grinding sound while locked in.But it works great,i've had it in some rough spots and up some hills so steep you cant see the road in front of you,so its not slipping. I've tore it down all the way to the axles, even pulled the axles.I've replaced all ball joints,U-joints, wheel bearings, and radius arm bushings on it,so i know what im working with, and I know its not in the transfer case.I took it to the ford dealership and they told me the gears in the front diff was bad, said $900 to rebuild it.I can't afford that and I don't know how to rebuild a diff.

So today at work,a guy was telling me that it sounds like the ring gear and pinion is bad in it and needs replacing. So can anyone expand on this? Not exactly sure what a ring gear and pinion is.What is a sign of it going bad? Thanks to any and all who can help!

Ring gear i inside the axle and is attached to the diff which houses the axle ends. The pinion is what your drive shaft connects to. THe drive shaft turns the pinion which turns the ring gear, which turns the axles.

Thanks for that illustration, are they hard to replace? Does my issue sound like this could be the problem? Im not a mechanical noob, even though it sounds like it,i've always done all my own mechanical work, but when it comes to the working gears, that i know nothing about.

If you havent set up gears I would get a shop to do it or a buddy that knows what he is doing go through it with you that way you can learn. To me yeah if its clunking and grinding and you have it narrowed down to that area, couldve shaved some teeth off causing it even thought 4x4 still engages.

if i were you i would find a complete center section (the aluminum housing that the front drive shaft bolts to on the axle. it holds the diff and ring and pinion) from a junk yard. they unbolt from the rest of the axle as a unit and will be much easier to swap in than replacing the ring and pinion itself. just be sure to find the correct gear ratio so the front and rear diffs are geared the same.

I think thats gonna be my best option,I definatly can swap out the front diff no problem.I used the gear ratio chart stuck to the top of the drivetrain forum page to find out that I have a 3.73 gear ratio. So I think im gonna call around to a couple junk yards and see what they have.

Another question, how do you remove the passenger side front axle? I have recently tried to remove it while replacing the Ujoints, and It would not come out? Its the long one,the short one or driver side axle pulled straight out.Is there a trick to it?

It actually sounds exactly like a hub. The ring and pinion bad would bind or not work at all. Go to a you pull it junkyard and get a pair of low mile hubs from a ranger or explorer. If ypu want check this jack the front up and spin each tire fwd and back bet one or both grind.

Pretty sure its not the hubs! When I got it,it had auto hubs, and it was making the grinding noise then too when in 4x4.I bought manual hubs and installed them and they still do it.In a matter of fact,I've had it jacked up off of all 4's and had the front tires and hubs off and had it in 4x4 going, and it was making the noise.

I just got off the phone with a guy who has a explorer front diff with the same gear ratio that I need, said he'll take it off for $100,does this sound high?? Or a good deal?

I think im gonna go look at it,and I want to be there when it comes off so I can see what everything looks like,if it all looks good,I think i'll pull the trigger on it and finally get this annoying problem taken care of.I crawled under it and check it out in depth and it looks like its a pretty straight foward swap out. Or am I missing something?

100 sounds good they are an easy swap did one myself not to long ago on a 93. Biggest pain for me was old stuck bolts. Make sure you have a damn good impact. Other than that ujoints are always fun

If you taking it out anyway drain it and check the ring and pinion and see if they are trashed. I personally am curious I have really only ever seen catastrophic fuck ups lol
