Exclamation 8.8 Axle went boom

Hey all, first post here. I'm a Jeep guy and participate in many of the Jeepforums. Looks like theres lots of good info here. I don't know much about Fords and my friend has an issue.

2001 Ford Ranger Edge, 4.0L V6, 4x4, Auto. Limited slip rear 8.8 axle. 170k highway miles.

I noticed gear oil leaking from one of his axle tubes as well as vibration/grinding when driving. His dad took it apart and turns out the axle is broken. We need to swap in a used axle and I know theres differences between the Explorer 8.8 vs Ranger 8.8 axle.

My question is what axles can I swap in? As long as the gear ratios are the same could I swap in a 7.5 axle from another ranger? We aren't concerned with using the same axle as he is looking to basically drive the truck for another month or two until he can afford a new vehicle. Would I need a different driveshaft if I swapped in a 7.5? Whats the difference between the brakes? Some salvage yards have 10" and some have 9" brakes. Is it hard to swap one for the other?

Thanks for the info and sorry for the long post!

Ranger 8.8's are 28 splined while Explorers are 31 splined.

A 7.5 will swap, but isn't as stout as the 8.8 and bein a 4x4, you would have to find the same gear ratio.

Nothin is swapable from 7.5 to 8.8............is the axle shaft itself broke or did it gernade the R&P?

Hope this helps ya a little..............

wrong. brakes and axle shafts are interchangeable
both must be 28 spline to swap axle shafts though

OP, you don't have to swap the driveshaft just make sure you get the correct gear ratio. I wouldn't put a 7.5 behind a 4.0

I'll take the broken axle if ur getting rid of it lol

Ok thanks for the help. I'm talking about swapping the entire axle. 8.8 for 7.5. The axle has a 4.10 gear ratio and it seems there are more 7.5 axles in this area then 8.8's with 4.10 gears. Whats involved when swapping the entire 7.5 axle (out of another ranger of similar year) for the 8.8? He is planning on getting rid of the truck soon so the strength isn't as much of a concern.

disconnect the driveshaft, leafs, shocks, brake lines then just reinstall with new axle. its easy. You could just rebuild the one you have....

how exactly is it broken? if its leaking on the side its prob the outer axle seal that went. If thats the case i'd just replace the bearings, seals, and check the backlash on the gears and just throw it back together.

when i blew up the bearings on my old 7.5 axle it made a grinding noise when i drove.
