Default 98 4x4

So I have the 98 4x4. What's the way to go? Buying the AVM manual locking hubs or just permanently engaging the hub's? Theoretically this shouldn't hurt, however I talked to a mechanic and he seems to think that'd damage axels and what not. Has anyone done this and ran into problems down the road? Whats the best route to take?

The mechanic is correct, get manual hubs. Making it a permenant 4x4 will destroy your axle(s) and/or your tansfer case.

Yeah, maual lockers are fine. If you want to keep it locked the whole time. Just weld your diff.

Sounds good, I had found a thread saying that you could do this ( http://www.therangerstation.com/Maga...04/offroad.htm ) but I wasn't sure if it was a smart thing to do or not.

thats not true at all actually. if that was the case every 2001 and up 4x4 ranger would have busted axles and transfer cases because thats exactly how they operate. they ditched the crappy PVH system after 2000 in favor of a "live" axle setup with no lock outs at all. the axles and front drive shaft spin all the time. if he permanently locked his hubs he would essentially be turning his into a "live" axle like the 2001+ rangers have.

so should I lock them? Or spend the $150 for the AVM manual hubs but I read the problem with them is that they fall out randomly while driving!?

I've had mine locked for a year now and not a difference and not a problem. Mechanic said everything looks great still. I believe you have yours locked too?

Some of the rangers came with a limited slip front end , these buck like crazy on dry pavement with the diff locked in, they feel like your going to bust a axel. The easiet way to bust a transfer case or axle is to run different sized tires

Get the AVM's keep them unlocked unless you need them locked.. stop being lazy. I have avm's on my 98 and they work just fine. just don't forget to service them.
