Default Rear axle fluid

I need to change the fluid in my daughters 2002 ranger. I don't have a service manual and don't really want to buy one. What is the correct fluid and any recommendations on brand type?

Thanks

80w90 is what Ford spec is for the rear....they call it something weird, but it eqates to 80W90. If limited slip, it also requires a friction modifier tube to be put in before the gear oil.

I run 75w90 synthetic Royal Purple in mine w/ additional friction modifier(my axle/gear guy lives by it, so I run it for the hell of it.)

Hate to bring up an old topic, but I'm considering doing the Mustang mod, and noticed this thread.

First of all, thanks for the fluid info--it'll help a lot, since i have to tear into the rear diff. However, I have a question: What exactly is "additional friction modifier"? I've never seen the term before, and was wondering what it is, and what it has to do with the rear diff. Thanks.

friction modifier is used in limited slip axles

If you buy fluid and it does not already contain it you buy it and add it in as well.
